How to Reach Aulli

Auli is located near Joshimath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Though it’s a bit remote, reaching Auli is a scenic and adventurous journey, filled with winding mountain roads, cable car rides, and Himalayan views.


Step 1: Reach Haridwar / Rishikesh / Dehradun (Gateway to Garhwal)

This is your entry point if you’re coming from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, etc.

🚆 By Train:

  • Haridwar and Rishikesh are the nearest major railway stations.

  • Well-connected to Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, and other cities.

✈️ By Air:

  • Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (DED) is the nearest airport.

  • From there, you can take a taxi or bus to Joshimath (around 280 km).


Step 2: Haridwar / Rishikesh → Joshimath (by road)

  • Distance: Around 270–290 km

  • Time: 8–10 hours

  • Route: Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Joshimath

You can hire a private taxi, take a shared cab, or hop on a GMOU bus to reach Joshimath, which is the base town for Auli.


Step 3: Joshimath → Auli

Now, the fun part begins! You have two options:

🚠 By Cable Car (Ropeway):

  • Asia’s longest and second highest cable car ride (4 km)

  • Scenic 15–20 min ride with spectacular views

  • Operates from Joshimath to Auli

  • Note: May be closed during bad weather, so check in advance

🛻 By Road:

  • You can also drive or take a taxi from Joshimath to Auli

  • Distance: ~10–12 km via a steep, narrow mountain road


🗓️ Best Time to Travel:

  • Dec to Feb – For snow, skiing & winter views

  • Mar to June – For green meadows & pleasant weather

Itinerary

  • Arrive at Joshimath (via Haridwar/Rishikesh road journey)

  • Enjoy lunch and take the cable car ride (ropeway) to Auli
    OR drive up if ropeway is not operational

  • Check-in to hotel or snow camp

  • Evening: Relax with a bonfire and enjoy sunset views over the Nanda Devi range

🛏 Night Stay: Auli

  • Early breakfast and head out for skiing / snowboarding sessions with instructors (gear available on rent)

  • Visit the Auli artificial lake – India’s highest man-made lake

  • Take a short trek or chair lift to Gorson Bugyal (if weather permits)

  • Optional: Visit Auli Ropeway Viewpoint and capture stunning panoramic photos

🎿 Don’t forget to enjoy hot Maggi or tea at local stalls in the snow!

🛏 Night Stay: Auli

  • After breakfast, take the ropeway or drive back down to Joshimath

  • On the way: Visit Narsingh Temple in Joshimath

  • Continue your journey back to Haridwar / Rishikesh / Dehradun / Delhi
